UGC Issued List of 21 Fake Universities in 2025

List of Fake Universities in India – The operation of fake educational institutes is not unknown to our vast and highly populated country. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has published a list of state-wise list of fake universities (as of May 2024). They have come up with a list of 21 names across the country. In this article, we will list them all. According to this list, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh take the cake when it comes to bogus university-level operations. The list consists of 8 such names from Delhi and 4 from Uttar Pradesh. These states are followed by Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and West Bengal with 2 fake universities each. Let’s take a look at them.

UGC publishes this list from time to time so that high school and college graduates are not tricked into taking admissions to these fake institutes. The names on this list are not registered with the UGC, they are not legally allowed to give out degrees or certificates to students and have no legal authorisation. The degrees and certificates obtained from these institutes hold no value in the eyes of the Indian Government and in the professional scene. 

University Accreditations

Several regulatory bodies have been formed to ensure that a university is legally recognised. These bodies ensure that the quality of education and other standards are maintained across institutes. They provide universities with accreditations and recognition so that students and other stakeholders are aware of the legal status of these institutes. Bodies from which you must check for accreditations for a university are listed below. 

  • National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) – Established in 1994, this autonomous body assesses and accredits universities and colleges in the country. Their operation works through a General Council (GC) and an Executive Committee (EC). The parameters on which the assessments are done include the teaching-learning process, student support, infrastructure, etc. 
  • National Board of Accreditation (NBA) – Established by AICTE in 1994, the NBA is now an autonomous body since 2010. Unlike NAAC, this body accredits programmes offered by institutes instead of the institutes themselves. 
  • All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) – This body is specifically responsible for the assessment and accreditations of the technical institutes of the country. 
  • University Grants Commission (UGC) – UGC is a body that provides recognition to universities in addition to financial assistance and guidance for operations. 
  • Discipline-Specific Accreditation Bodies – There are a handful of other bodies that are responsible for the accreditations of discipline-specific programmes and institutes. These include the National Medical Commission, Bar Council of India and Pharmacy Council of India.
